14-05 | album review: ziggy marley 'fly rasta'

This album will take you back and forward between Ziggy's future presence and his past. Ziggy started writing this one when he was starting growing his locks. His inspiration comes from living with his father and learning about Rastafari. Some of this inspiration he had for almost 30 years. It all comes together in this album. Ziggy Marley haven't sang about Rasta for many years now and we are glad he made this album. It will give you the opportunity to get to know Ziggy Marley, his view on Rastafari and the world a little bit better. Ziggy Marley himself tells he needed to come home. A celebration of his roots but also he wants to push some boundaries, and be futuristic for reggae. Offcourse combined in a high quality production. Dave Cooley helped with the production of this album and was very important to Ziggy realizing this album. Fly Rasta is a wonderfull add-on to an all ready very impressive list of productions by Ziggy Marley. An artist who will always carry a part of his father with him. Sometimes positive, sometimes negative, but always a blessing...
1. I don't wanna live on Mars. Ziggy starts with a sweet car-driving (singalong) reggae-pop tune. A little bit rock influenced tune and it shows the diversity Ziggy Marley is giving his fans these days. Not just the reggae music but also some pop-rock songs. After (pop)songs like 'Tomorrow People' and 'Love is my religion' we are waiting for the next big tune to hit the charts by Ziggy Marley.
2. Fly Rasta (feat. Daddy U-Roy) In this tune Ziggy shows that he is not forgetting about his roots. Including reggae veteran (Daddy) U-Roy. An oldskool sound on a modern album. This song highlights the album in our humble opinion and it makes us long for a new authentic reggae album by Ziggy.
3. Lighthouse A humble (dreamers)tune with a big message, just let Ziggy take you away on this tune. Another pop tune with a nice reggae slice on the back. Beautiful classic violins and piano again prove that Ziggy is open for experiments and it all fits perfectly together.
4. Sunshine A tune about overcoming struggles in life. Sunshine wouldn't be so nice if it wasn't for rain. This tune takes you back to the days when Ziggy was playing with the Melody Makers. (We want more!!) This tune will make you dance for sure!
5. Moving forward Modern reggae tune, Forward ever, Backwards never! Ziggy as an artist is indeed moving forward. Proven by this high quality album.
6. You A standard but sweet reggae lovers track. Some very nice electronic add-ons. Little bit funky track as well.
7. So many rising An acoustic uplifting tune. Humble and great at the same time. Ziggy's voice really comes out on this on one. This song makes you think about life. Good and Bad. Good over evil!
8. I get up A nice collabo with his sister Cedella Marley and again you are taken on a trip down memory lane, this one also takes you back to the melody makers time. How nice it is to hear Ziggy with his sister on this track!
9. You're my Yoko Ono A sweet lovers song about peace of mind through love in life!
10. Give it away. An up-tempo dancing tune with a little augustus pablo flavour on the end. Again a link to reggae's foundation, much appreciated.
11. I don't wanna live on Mars (Acoustic version)
