You are coming to Amstelveen (Close to Amsterdam) to perform at the Caribbean and Diaspora Festival to celebrate the Caribbean on the 18th of August. What can we expect from that performance ?
You can expect 100% vibes and a collection of old and new songs from my latest album 'Living the dream' and hit songs like 'Hey Mama'. A song i did with the black eyed peas. Hello Daring, Raggamuffin Girl, Good to have the feeling, Your the Best and more... Why do you think it is important to celebrate the Caribbean Islands ? It is important because its our culture, where we are from, and we have to keep pushing it to the world if you don't know where your from you don't now where your going. How many times have you been to Amsterdam yet ? and what do you think about this city? I have been to Amsterdam 3 or 4 times over the years and i like the place alot many thing to see enjoy the coffee shop etc.. Are you coming over exclusively for this festival or are there any other chances for the massive to see you perform ? I am coming just for this festival the next day i will be playing at Rototom in Spain & Costa brava. What were the artists who inspired you the most to what you are doing now ? U-Roy was the man when i heard the works wake the town and tell the people love Papa San, Dennis ALcaphone too... What role is there in Modern Day society for Dancehall/Reggae music ? Reggae has a important role in this world it loved by people in 4 corner of the earth you have different side to it Root's with people like Chronixx, Kabraka Pyramid, Protoje, Macka B, etc are bringing a positive messages that up lift people and is needed. You also have Dancehall basement that is at the for front of the dance culture around the world people every where are using the dance move from Jamaica.
What is your opinion on the new wave of Dancehall artists like Alkaline and Popcaan ? Different strokes for different folks not my cup of tea. What’s the difference in Reggae music nowaways coming from the Uk and Jamaica ? Music in general is more computer driven. In Jamaica it is more like HipHop than Reggae. It is only the vocals that give it that reggae feel. It is much the same in the UK but people like the Mad Professor is still using live drums and is playing everything live to give the music that live feel. Lots of artist in JA are still doing it live as well so i guess not much has changed really. All artists have their own way of doings. You probably don’t need this introduction for most readers but can you tell the readers a little bit more about your music career so far. Tippa Irie started his musical career in South London on his father’s Sound System called Musical Messiah. Family members soon realized that young Tippa had talent and encouraged him to enter local talent competitions. Most of the local Sound Systems in the area also recognized his talent and invited him to perform on their Sound Systems. The first Sound System to actually record Tippa on record was Sir Lloyd on the LGR record label where he made his first record at age 17, called The Opposite. Shortly after, Tippa got his first big break when he was asked to join King Tubby’s Sound. He stayed with King Tubby’s for a couple of years before being spotted by Dennis Rowe and Lloyd Francis from Saxon Sound System, who were both blown away by Tippa’s talent. They asked him to come to South London and join Saxon Sound.
Saxon Sound System became the forefront of the UK Reggae and Dancehall scene and helped launch the careers of Maxi Priest, Papa Levi, Smiley Culture, Tippa’s sister Miss Irie, Daddy Colonel, Daddy Rusty, Roger Robin, Peter King-who created the fast talking style that Saxon MC’s were famous for- and many more. The sessions were recorded on cassette tapes and as the tapes circulated, their popularity grew. Tippa and Saxon became famous all over the UK, USA, Europe and Jamaica. Record
labels such as Virgin, Greensleeves, Island, Ariwa and Fashion became interested in the artists’ on the Sound.Greensleeves offered Tippa a recording contract which he accepted and went on to release ‘Jus a Speak’ with Daddy Colonel. Next, came a string of singles including ‘Good to have the feeling you’re the best’, ’Complain Neighbour’ and ‘Hello Darling’ which hit no. 1 in the British Reggae charts. Hello Darling also sailed to number 22 in the British National charts and was a hit all over Europe and the Caribbean. ‘Hello Darling’ was taken from Tippa’s first album ‘Is it really happening to me’r eleased in 1986. Since that album, Tippa has released 15 studio albums with several number 1 hits including ‘Ragamuffin girl’ ft. Peter Hunnigale and ‘Superwoman’ ft. Winsome which were released in 1989. ‘Stress’ ft.
